Suspended between sculpture and system, the Albero bookcase by Poltrona Frau reinterprets modular shelving through the radical vision of Gianfranco Frattini. Designed in the late 1950s and emblematic of the Neoliberty movement, its floor-to-ceiling axis in solid Canaletto walnut veneer rotates 360 degrees, transforming function into architecture.

The rack-and-pinion centre column supports eight adjustable MDF shelves—precisely engineered and lacquered by hand. Secured with rubber anti-slip feet, Albero delivers structural clarity and expressive rhythm in equal measure. Ideal for gallery interiors, design libraries, or architectural living rooms, this sculptural bookcase remains one of mid-century Italy’s most iconic contributions to modern form.

MATERIALS & DETAILS

Supporting structure crafted from solid Canaletto walnut, featuring two toothed supports with a unique rack joint and four vertical pillars. Regularly spaced holes allow for the precise assembly of 12 veneered MDF shelves.

Shelves made from MDF with Canaletto walnut veneer, harmonising with the frame for a seamless, architectural aesthetic.

Fixing system uses two anchoring ferrules—one secured to the ceiling within a recessed cup, the other fixed to the floor with slip-resistant rubber. Stability is ensured by four adjustable metal locknuts (two upper, two lower).

Hardware includes brass screws and antiqued burnished steel finishes for the ferrules and ceiling cup, adding refined detail to the technical elements.

Rotation allows the entire bookcase to turn 360° around its axis, offering flexibility in display and access.

Aesthetic details include a laser-engraved designer signature and the Poltrona Frau logo on the lower toothed support.
