A visual meditation in material and form, the Chado rug by Poltrona Frau draws from the ritual precision of Japanese tea ceremonies. Its gridded surface recalls the softened geometry of shoji screens, expressed through a hand-knotted blend of bamboo silk and linen. The composition balances movement and stillness—each line considered, each shadow intentional.
Crafted using a cut-pile technique, the surface plays with light: silk’s lustrous sheen set against the matte grain of linen. The palette—oxidised metal, steeped tea, and ink-washed stone—offers depth without noise. A designer rug conceived as a grounding element for architectural interiors.

Composition features a walkable surface made from 60% bamboo silk and 40% linen, combining the smooth sheen of bamboo silk with the volume and resilience of linen fibres. The inner structure is crafted from cotton for added stability.
Pattern formed in bamboo silk with a contrasting edge grid, adding definition and visual depth.
Technique entirely hand-knotted on wooden looms using the ‘Cut’ method, creating a uniform, velvety fleece across the surface. The border is made from bamboo silk and hand-sewn to finish all four sides with precision.
Thickness approximately 7 mm.
